Match your tow bar to your vehicle's weight -- most RVers are covered by 6,000 lb.
Safe and Easy Starts With the Right Tow Bar
Safe and easy flat towing begins with one thing: the right weight rating. Pick a tow bar rated at or above your towed vehicle's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) -- the number on the driver's door jamb sticker, not the curb weight. Match or exceed it and you are safe and legal.
Most cars and mid-size SUVs are covered by a 6,000-lb bar, with larger vehicles stepping up from there. The other half of safe and easy is keeping the tow bar level -- if your hitch and baseplate heights are more than 3 inches apart, add a drop receiver. Free shipping on orders over $100.
Not sure of your GVWR? Call us and we will match the right bar in minutes.
It comes down to the weight of the vehicle you tow. Blue Ox offers the Adventurer and Acclaim for lighter vehicles around 5,000 lbs, the Alpha for mid-range setups at 8,500 lbs, the Avail at 10,000 lbs, and the Apollo for the heaviest at 12,500 and 15,000 lbs. Match the bar's rating to your towed vehicle's GVWR -- tell us what you tow and we will confirm.
Will a Blue Ox tow bar work with my baseplate?
Blue Ox tow bars are built to connect to Blue Ox baseplates, so if you already run a Blue Ox baseplate you are set. If you have a different brand, tell us -- in some cases an adapter or a matching version works, and we will sort it out before you buy.
Are Blue Ox tow bars motorhome-mounted?
Yes -- most Blue Ox recreational tow bars store folded on the back of your motorhome and swing out to connect. The arms extend and lock as you pull forward, so hooking up is quick and you are not lifting a heavy bar onto the car.
How do I keep my Blue Ox setup level?
Your tow bar should pull within about 3 inches of level. Measure your motorhome's hitch height and your baseplate's tow bar connection -- if they differ by more than 3 inches, add a drop or rise receiver to bring it in line.
Do I also need a supplemental braking system?
In most cases, yes. A supplemental brake applies the towed vehicle's brakes in step with your motorhome, shortens stopping distance, and is required by law in many US states and Canadian provinces. It is the most important safety add-on for any flat tow.
Do you ship to Canada, and how fast?
We ship across the United States and Canada. Most orders leave our warehouse within one business day, and orders over $100 ship free to the lower 48 states.
