Why an Accessory Kit Matters

Most flat towing packages include the tow bar and baseplate — but a truly complete installation needs four more things: a power cord to keep your towed vehicle’s battery charged on the road, brake light wiring so your motorhome’s signals show on the towed vehicle, a tow bar cover to protect the coupler head from road grime, and security locks to keep the pins in place and deter theft. An accessory kit bundles all four in one order, matched to your specific tow bar model.

Blue Ox accessory kits are matched to their receiver and vehicle-mounted tow bar lineup — from the 2″ and 2.5″ receiver kits for the Apollo and Avail to the Avail/Alpha kit for mid-range setups. Roadmaster combo kits cover the Nighthawk, Sterling, Falcon 2, Falcon All-Terrain, StowMaster, and Tracker models. In both cases, using the matched kit ensures everything fits and works together correctly from the first trip. Free shipping on orders over $100 to the lower 48 states.

Frequently Asked Questions — Tow Bar Accessory Kits

What is included in a tow bar accessory kit?
A complete tow bar accessory kit typically includes four items: a 12-volt power cord that keeps your towed vehicle’s battery charged while driving, a brake light wiring harness that connects the motorhome’s turn signals and brake lights to the towed vehicle, a tow bar cover that protects the coupler head from road debris and corrosion, and a set of security locks that lock the tow bar pins and baseplate connections against theft. Buying a kit ensures every component is matched and compatible with your specific tow bar model.
Do I need to match the accessory kit to my specific tow bar brand and model?
Yes — accessory kits are designed to match specific tow bar models. Blue Ox kits are made for Blue Ox tow bars (Apollo, Avail, Alpha), and Roadmaster combo kits are made for Roadmaster tow bars (Nighthawk, Sterling, Falcon, StowMaster, Tracker). Using the matched kit ensures the wiring connectors, power cord length, and lock pin sizes all fit your setup correctly. If you bought a complete tow package, check whether an accessory kit was included — some packages include it, others do not. Call us at 877-736-2267 if you’re not sure which kit fits your bar.
What is the difference between a diode wiring kit and a bulb-and-socket wiring kit?
A diode wiring kit installs inline with your towed vehicle’s existing tail light wiring and uses diodes to prevent electrical backfeed from the motorhome into the towed vehicle’s circuits — the cleanest and most reliable method. A bulb-and-socket kit adds separate bulbs into the towed vehicle’s tail light housings and is the simplest installation. Most RVers prefer the diode kit for long-term use. If your vehicle has LED taillights, a diode kit is typically required. Not sure which fits your vehicle? Call us and we’ll help you choose.
Is the accessory kit included when I buy a complete tow package?
It depends on the package. Blue Ox complete tow packages include a wiring kit and safety cables, but the full accessory kit (power cord, cover, and locks) is often sold separately. Roadmaster complete packages vary by model — some include the combo kit and some do not. When ordering a complete package, check the product description carefully or call us at 877-736-2267 and we’ll confirm exactly what is included and what you still need to order to complete your installation.
What is a 7-to-6 wire towing kit and do I need one?
A 7-to-6 wire kit is needed when your motorhome has a 7-pin round connector but your tow bar uses a 6-pin flat connector — or vice versa. The kit includes a conversion harness so the two systems communicate correctly. Most newer diesel pusher motorhomes use a 7-pin connector, while many tow bar systems use a 6-pin flat. If you’re not sure which connector your motorhome has, look at the plug on the back of the coach — or call us at 877-736-2267 and we’ll confirm which wiring kit you need before you order.
