Tow Vehicle Tail Light Wiring

Getting the brake and turn signals right on your towed vehicle is not as simple as it used to be. The correct wiring depends on your vehicle's lighting technology -- and that has changed dramatically over the last 20 years. Call us before you order and we will match you to the right solution.

Older Vehicles

Incandescent / Bulb Tail Lights

Simple diode wiring kit. Plugs in at the tail light sockets. No modifications needed.

LED Vehicles

Standard LED Tail Lights

Dedicated wiring harness that ties directly into the brake and turn signal circuits.

Late-Model Vehicles

Progressive or Adaptive LED

Requires a 50-ohm resistor chip to prevent dashboard error codes and protect the lighting control module.

Every Wiring Kit Includes

What You Receive

A Complete Brake and Turn Signal Wiring Solution -- Confirmed for Your Vehicle's Lighting System

Every kit RV Camp Champ ships is matched to your tow vehicle's specific lighting technology. Here is what is in your order:

Included

Vehicle-Side Wiring Harness or Diode Kit

The connection at your tow vehicle's tail lights -- a plug-in diode kit for incandescent vehicles or a dedicated harness for LED vehicles. Matched to your specific lighting system.

Included

Motorhome-Side Plug and Umbilical Cable

The cable and connector that runs between your motorhome's electrical system and your tow vehicle, carrying brake, turn, and tail light signals.

When Required

50-Ohm Resistor Chip

Required for vehicles with progressive, sequential, or adaptive LED lighting systems. Prevents dashboard error codes and protects the lighting control module. Included when your vehicle needs it.

Included

Connectors, Hardware, and Instructions

4-flat or 6-way connectors, mounting clips, wire ties, and step-by-step installation instructions. Everything to complete a clean, reliable install.

Why Wiring Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

Three Generations of Tail Light Technology

The right wiring kit depends entirely on what type of tail lights your tow vehicle has. Lighting technology has gone through three distinct generations -- each one requires a different approach.

Older Vehicles

Incandescent Tail Lights

Simple diode wiring kit that plugs into the tail light sockets. No splicing, no harness routing, no modifications. The easiest install in the category.

Common on vehicles older than 2010.

LED Vehicles

Standard LED Tail Lights

A dedicated wiring harness that ties directly into the brake and turn signal circuits at the tail light assembly. More involved install, but no additional components needed.

Common on vehicles from approximately 2010 to 2018.

Late-Model Vehicles

Progressive or Adaptive LED

Requires the LED harness AND a 50-ohm resistor chip. The chip restores the load the vehicle's module expects to see -- without it, the module throws error codes or disables the circuit.

Common on late-model F-150s, Jeep trims, and most imports after 2018.

Not Sure Which Generation Your Vehicle Is?

Call RV Camp Champ at 877-736-2267 before you order. We look up your exact year, make, model, and trim and tell you which wiring solution applies -- including whether you need a 50-ohm resistor chip. Takes two minutes and gets you the right kit the first time.

Common Questions

Tail Light Wiring Questions, Answered

How do I know which wiring kit is right for my vehicle?

It depends on your vehicle's lighting technology. Older vehicles with incandescent tail lights use a plug-in diode kit. Standard LED vehicles need a dedicated harness. Newer vehicles with progressive or adaptive LED also require a 50-ohm resistor chip. Call 877-736-2267 -- we confirm which solution applies to your exact year, make, and model before you order anything.

What is a 50-ohm resistor chip and why do some vehicles need one?

It simulates the electrical load the vehicle's lighting control module expects to see. Progressive and adaptive LED systems are sensitive to load changes -- when you add an external wiring connection, the module detects it and may throw a dashboard error or disable the circuit. The chip restores the expected load and prevents that problem. Without it on a vehicle that requires one, the tow wiring may not work reliably.

What is included in a tail light wiring kit?

Every kit includes the vehicle-side connection (diode kit or wiring harness), the motorhome-side plug and umbilical cable, connectors, mounting hardware, and installation instructions. Kits for adaptive LED vehicles also include the required 50-ohm resistor chip. Exact contents vary by vehicle -- RV Camp Champ confirms the right kit before shipping.

Can I install tail light wiring myself?

Most customers install their own wiring. Diode kits for incandescent vehicles plug into the tail light sockets in minutes. LED harnesses take a bit longer -- you route a dedicated wiring run from the tail lights to a connection point. If you are not comfortable working near your vehicle's electrical circuits, a body shop or garage can install in under an hour for most vehicles. Call 877-736-2267 if you have questions before or during your install.

Do you ship wiring kits to Canada?

Yes. RV Camp Champ ships across the United States and Canada. Free shipping on orders over $100 applies to the 48 contiguous United States. Canadian customers -- place your order and we will contact you with the exact freight amount before charging anything. Call 877-736-2267.
