What is a receiver-style tow bar?
A receiver-style tow bar mounts on your motorhome and slides into a standard hitch receiver, usually 2 inch or 2-1/2 inch. It is the most common setup and the easiest to live with -- the bar stores folded on the coach and swings out to connect.
How do I know if I need receiver style?
Look at the hitch on the back of your motorhome. If it has a square receiver opening, you want a receiver-style bar. If it has a ball or a pintle hook instead, you would choose coupler or pintle style. Not sure? Send us a photo and we will tell you.
Which weight rating do I need?
Match the bar's rating to your towed vehicle's GVWR -- the door jamb number, not the curb weight. Most cars and mid-size SUVs are covered by 6,000 lb; larger vehicles step up to 8,000, 10,000, and on to 15,000 lb. When you are between sizes, size up.
Will a receiver-style bar fit my baseplate?
The receiver style is how the bar connects to your motorhome; the other end connects to your baseplate. Blue Ox, Roadmaster, and Demco all offer receiver-style bars, and many come in versions for more than one baseplate brand. Tell us your baseplate and we will match it.
Do I also need a supplemental braking system?
In most cases, yes. A supplemental brake applies the towed vehicle's brakes in step with your motorhome, shortens stopping distance, and is required by law in many US states and Canadian provinces. It is the most important safety add-on for any flat tow.
